JESS MAGHAN
Having spent thirty professional years in police and prison bureaucracies and fifteen years in academia, Dr. Maghan has acquired healthy respect for the power of authority. As Chief Training Officer of the Louisiana Department of Correction and the State Penitentiary at Angola; Superintendent of the Training for Illinois Department of Correction, Commissioner of Training for the New York City Department of Correction and Director of Training for the New York City Police Department, he has worked directly with the most naked forms of authority, and as an international prisons consultant, studied it in depth and written extensively about its power. Now, perhaps inevitably, he has turned his trained eye on the most iconic of all authority figures: FATHERS. [40 Fathers-The Search for Father in Oneself, Welcome Rain Publishers, New York, NY: 2009; available on line at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Abe Books and through local books stores nationally.]
40 Fathers - I find it fascinating and emotionally-charged reading. It is filled with yearning and I can't remember the last time I read a book that caused me to think, ponder & wonder so very much. After reading 6 or 7 entries, I decided I did not want to read it in one sitting (though I could very well have, it is riveting). There is quite a complex simplicity to it all, and that is the brilliance of it. ... I have to say it is one of the most unique pieces of literature I've ever encountered and I haven't quite put my finger on just what exactly it is that is so involving. The book demands an openness to let the memories hidden in our subconscious come out and be encountered. I have a feeling that people who read this book will at some point sit down and start writing.
—Phil Funkenbush, Theater Director, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Springfield, IL
